DTD only supports a single instance of a registered service with a given
name. For widget preview development, we sometimes want to use a DTD
instance that's attached to an IDE to test IDE integration. However,
IDEs frequently spawn their own widget preview instances which register
services with DTD. In the case where `flutter widget-preview start
--dtd-url=<dtd-url>` is run and `dtd-url` points to a DTD instance with
another widget preview service running, the process simply crashes.
This change adds a unique identifier to the widget preview DTD service
and stream names that allows for each `flutter widget-preview start`
instance to register its own unique widget preview DTD services, even if
other widget preview instances are using the same DTD instance.

This adds a flag,
`--cross-origin-isolation`/`--no-cross-origin-isolation` that allows the
user to explicitly control whether `flutter run`/`drive`/`test` serves
files with COOP/COEP headers. If the user doesn't specify, it uses cross
origin isolation when wasm is enabled and no cross origin isolation when
wasm is disabled.
Each project's `pubspec.yaml` is copied into a temporary directory
before trying to determine which packages can be updated, but this
`pubspec.yaml` is currently deleted immediately after the dependencies
have been determined for the single package. This means that projects
that have path dependencies on other projects in the repository don't
have their dependencies updated properly as the path dependencies fail
to resolve.
This change updates the `update-packages` logic to copy each project's
`pubspec.yaml` to a temporary directory with a consistent relative
directory structure. The `_upgrade` function has been updated to support
processing multiple projects before deleting the temporary directory,
allowing for projects with path dependencies on each other to have their
pubspecs placed in the correct relative directories for them to resolve
correctly.

Passing the DTD URI via a Dart define results in a new
`<hash>.cache.dill.track.dill` being created on each run as the DTD URI
is never the same and the `cache.dill.track.dill` hash is partly based
on the set of Dart defines. These files are not cleaned up
automatically, so they could take up a significant amount of memory over
time.
This change adds an additional code generation step to the widget
previewer which populates
`widget_preview_scaffold/lib/src/dtd/dtd_connection_info.dart` with a
constant containing the DTD URI provided by the tool.

Before this change, there was logic in `flutter attach` that would try
and listen for a new application to attach to in the scenario the
current target application disappeared. This behavior isn't documented,
and has resulted in a `StateError` being thrown due to the VM service
URIs stream being listened to multiple times.
This change removes this behavior, which also prevents the `StateError`
from being thrown.

This change fixes an issue where the preview command would crash if a

directory. It also improves testing for `PreviewManifest` in the context
of pub workspaces and ensures that `FlutterProject` instances are
refreshed based on the latest `pubspec.yaml` contents.

Since `flutter clean` can delete the `.dart_tool/` directory while a
`flutter widget-preview start` command is active, it's possible for the
`widget_preview_scaffold` to be deleted and cause the preview process to
crash.
This change works around this issue by always generating the
`widget_preview_scaffold` project under $TMP on each invocation of the
previewer. This doesn't result in much of a regression in startup times
as we currently aren't launching the previewer using restored state as
this isn't currently possible with the web device targets. Moving the
scaffold under $TMP means Flutter tooling will never accidentally delete
the scaffold while the previewer is running.

Passes `EXCLUDED_ARCHS` from Xcode project build settings to the
xcodebuild command, fixing macOS builds when
dependencies don't support all architectures.
### Problem
Release builds for macOS create universal binaries (arm64 + x86_64) by
default. This causes build failures when
using native dependencies that only provide binaries for a single
architecture. While developers can set
`EXCLUDED_ARCHS` in their Xcode project's xcconfig files, Swift Package
Manager dependencies don't respect this
project-level setting.
**Fixes**: https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/176605
## Solution
Instead of adding a CLI flag, pass `EXCLUDED_ARCHS` from the Xcode
project's build settings directly to xcodebuild. This ensures Swift
Package Manager dependencies respect architecture exclusions set in the
project configuration.
**How it works:**
When `macos/Runner/Configs/Release.xcconfig` contains:
```xcconfig
EXCLUDED_ARCHS = x86_64
```
The build command now includes `EXCLUDED_ARCHS=x86_64`, creating an
arm64-only binary.
## Usage
**1. Edit your xcconfig file** (e.g.,
`macos/Runner/Configs/Release.xcconfig`):
```xcconfig
#include "../../Flutter/Flutter-Release.xcconfig"
#include "Warnings.xcconfig"
// Exclude x86_64 for dependencies that only support Apple Silicon
EXCLUDED_ARCHS = x86_64
```
**2. Build normally:**
```bash
flutter build macos --release
```
**Without exclusions (default behavior):**
```bash
# Creates universal binary (arm64 + x86_64)
flutter build macos --release
```
## Implementation
- Modified `buildMacOS()` to retrieve `EXCLUDED_ARCHS` from Xcode
project build settings
- Pass `EXCLUDED_ARCHS` to xcodebuild command when set and non-empty
- Removed unused `activeArch` parameter
- Added inline documentation explaining the SPM compatibility fix
## Testing
**Manual verification:**
- ✅ Built ExecuTorch Flutter example with `EXCLUDED_ARCHS = x86_64`:
arm64-only binary (518.6MB)
- ✅ Built without exclusions: universal binary (existing behavior)
- ✅ Verified architecture with `lipo -info`: arm64-only when excluded
**Unit tests:**
- ✅ Added test: "Passes EXCLUDED_ARCHS from Xcode project to xcodebuild
command"
- ✅ Added test: "Does not pass EXCLUDED_ARCHS when not set in Xcode
project"
- ✅ All 25 macOS build tests passing

It's possible that the preview detector is in the middle of processing
sources after a source file was changed while the widget previewer is
shutting down if we're not holding the mutex. This can result in the
analysis context being disposed of when we don't expect it, causing
requests to the analyzer to return errors.
This change guards against this scenario by ensuring that all calls to
`findPreviewFunctions` are guarded by the mutex. This change also
removes assumptions related to the return type from analyzer APIs to
account for the possibility that an error response was returned.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/178472
If Flutter Web is not enabled, the widget previewer will crash when
trying to find a web device to launch with. This change explicitly
checks for this case and throws `ToolExit` with instructions to enable
Flutter Web if it's not enabled.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/178486
The `flutter` tool creates various directories for ephemeral state while
executing commands. In some situations, these directories contain or
link to other Dart / Flutter projects with '.dart' sources or
'pubspec.yaml's. If these files change while the widget previewer is
active (e.g., due to a `flutter pub get` downloading and configuring new
plugins for the project), the previewer's directory watcher will detect
the change and attempt to analyze the source. This causes an exception
to be thrown by the analyzer as the modified file path does not have a
valid analysis context.
This change adds additional checks to the `PreviewDetector` that allow
for ignoring changes to `pubspec.yaml`s and `.dart` sources under known
ephemeral directories (e.g., build/,
linux/flutter/ephemeral/, etc), as well as `.dart` files that aren't
associated with an analysis context.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/178317
Using the presence of `.dart_tool` in a project to determine if it's a
valid Flutter project is not correct as the directory will not exist if
`flutter pub get` has not yet been run.

Added a default +1 build number to the version field in
pubspec.yaml.tmpl (line 5). This ensures consistent versioning behavior
across iOS and Android for newly created Flutter projects.
Why this change?
- On iOS, CFBundleShortVersionString (marketing version) must be numeric
(major.minor.patch) and does not include the build number unless
explicitly set.
- On Android, the version name and version code can both be set,
allowing more flexibility in representing the build number.
- Without a build number in pubspec.yaml, Android defaults to +1 while
iOS omits it, resulting in inconsistent version strings between
platforms.
Benefits
- Consistency: Both iOS and Android builds will start with the same
format, e.g., 1.0.0+1.
- Clarity: New projects have a visible build number by default, reducing
confusion for new developers.
- Best Practice: Aligns with Apple’s numeric marketing version rules
while preserving Android’s flexibility.
Developers can still override --build-name and --build-number as needed
for custom versioning.

Also moves `dtd_services_test.dart` to actually use the
`WidgetPreviewScaffoldDtdServices` implementation, which would have
caught the typecast issue in the implementation.
Projects within the same workspace can depend on each other without
explicitly specifying path dependencies or dependency overrides using
the following syntax:
```
dependencies:
my_workspace_project: # No constraint or path
```
This is treated as a "hosted" dependency, which conflicts with the path
dependencies used by the widget_preview_scaffold.
This change introduces dependency_overrides for each package in the
workspace watched by the widget previewer to allow for dependencies to
be resolved correctly.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/176018
This change introduces `PersistentPreferences`, which allows for the
widget previewer to save settings to disk.
`PersistentPreferences` makes use of the existing `~/.flutter-devtools`
directory used by DevTools for the same purpose, writing preferences in
JSON format to `~/.flutter-devtools/.widget-preview`.
With the assumption that IDEs will not create a debug session for the
widget previewer, the widget inspector's source navigation functionality
won't function as there's no IDE to listen to `navigate` events sent via
`postEvent`.
This change overrides some widget inspector behavior to allow for
navigating to source locations via the DTD Editor service instead of
relying on the VM service's `postEvent`.
This change also makes some minor changes to the diagnostic properties
and descriptions displayed within the inspector to display group and
custom preview annotation details.

This change adds support for two DTD Editor service RPCs and makes
functionality that's dependent on the availability of the Editor service
reactive to the service availability changing.
The newly added `getActiveLocation` Editor RPC now allows for us to
properly determine which source file is selected at startup, removing
the need for special casing around initializing the filtered preview
set.
The `navigateToCode` Editor RPC is now supported, and URIs in stack
traces can now be clicked to navigate to the source location in the IDE.
Both filtering previews by selected file and stack frame navigation
links are only enabled when the Editor service is available.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/176113
This change updates `Preview` to be a `base` class instead of `final`,
allowing for developers to extend `Preview` and create their own custom
preview annotations.
To reduce friction associated with working with `const` constructors,
two new methods have been added: `MultiPreview.transform()` and
`Preview.transform()`. These methods are invoked at runtime by the
preview environment, allowing for developers to create or modify
`Preview` instances with non-constant values. This also relaxes
restrictions around `Preview`'s callback parameters (e.g., `wrapper`),
which do not need to be static or public when provided to a `Preview` in
the context of a `*.transform()` method. This makes it possible to
create custom preview classes that completely encapsulate their
callbacks, removing the need for separate public, static function
declarations.
To make transforming `Preview`s simpler, a `PreviewBuilder` utility
class has also been added.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/175534
This PR contains the initial work to prepare for the removal of
instances of DevTools being served manually by the flutter_tool, instead
relying on DDS to serve DevTools. This will be consistent with how the
standalone Dart VM serves DevTools, tying the DevTools lifecycle to a
live DDS instance. This will allow for the removal of much of the logic
needed to properly manage the lifecycle of the DevTools server in a
future PR. Also, by serving DevTools from DDS, users will no longer need
to forward a secondary port in remote workflows as DevTools will be
available on the DDS port.
There's two remaining circumstances that will prevent us from removing
`DevtoolsRunner` completely:
- The daemon's `devtools.serve` endpoint
- `flutter drive`'s `--profile-memory` flag used for recording memory
profiles
This change adds the following events:
- `widget_preview.initializing`: sent immediately after the widget
previewer starts. This event includes the PID of the process starting
the widget previewer for use by tooling to explicitly kill the tool
process.
- `widget_preview.logMessage`: sent for calls to `Logger` methods when
in machine mode. This follows the same format as `daemon.logMessage`.
This change also fixes and improves testing of
`WidgetPreviewMachineAwareLogger` in `widget_preview_machine_test.dart`
as the existing test validator did not cause tests to fail correctly.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/175002
This change adds support for creating groups of widget previews.
Previews with the same `group` parameter will be grouped together in a
collapsable tile in widget previewer. Previews without a provided
`group` will be placed in the `Default` group.
This change also slightly reworks the UI to make individual previews
more easily distinguishable from preview groups, moves the controls for
the previewer to the bottom of the preview window, and adds a divider
between the preview name and preview content if a name is provided.
Fixes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/173871

/>
This change allows for the widget previewer to react to
`activeLocationChanged` events sent over the `Editor` DTD service to
automatically filter the set of visible previews based on the currently
selected file in the IDE. This functionality can be turned on or off
depending on whether or not the developer wants to see all previews in
the project at once.
This change also includes some minor refactoring and UI changes to move
the widget preview environment controls to a reserved area at the bottom
of the preview window.

Closes https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/173904.
It's not clear to me how `git describe --tags HEAD` ever ... worked to
determine a fallback. From what I can tell, the _intent_ was to use the
latest (newest? closest?) tag as the base version, and then append
`-{commitCount}-{shortHash}` as the fallback version number when on
`master` (or any non-published branch).
So, I rewrote the implementation, unfortunately with 4 separate calls
out to `git ...` instead of a single one.
There are 20+ tests that fail as a result of this change, mostly because
they make specific expectations around `git describe` being invoked, and
of course that is no longer the case - putting those aside, I'd like to
double check that:
1. I understand what the original command was _intending_ to do
2. We like the _output_ of the updated command
3. ... we either are okay with the implementation, or have an
alternative in mind (I'm no `git` master)
